Day Care Decisions

This year, as the summer days slowly passed us by and the girls became more and more active and social, Hershey and I realized that keeping Jane and Emma in the house with a nanny or our moms all week long would be detrimental to them.  Letting our nanny go was a difficult decision, but it was definitely better for the girls (and our pockets!).

The task of choosing a day care for Jane and Emma was daunting, and I'm asked all of the time now which center the girls go to and how we chose the place that we did.  So I figure that there are a lot of other mamas out there with the same task in front of them, fretting over horror stories of day care centers and trying to figure out WHERE THE HECK DO I EVEN BEGIN!?  Here's how we tackled the job.

1.  We went by word-of-mouth.  We talked to people and took recommendations and called everyone who we were referred to.  If someone likes a place enough to refer them to you, chances are good they are doing something RIGHT.

2.  We narrowed down our choices based on location and levels of care, and then we set up 4 interviews - one in-home care, one day care attached to a church, one early learning center, and one Montessori school.

3.  Because of the way that our summer was going, we wanted to make our decision before leaving to go on vacation, so we did all 4 tours in one week (one per day), and we took the girls with us to get their reactions.  Most of the appointments were done about an hour before lunch, so that the girls weren't hungry or tired when we went.

4.  I created a list of questions that I really wanted answered.  Some of those questions were things like:

  • Do you have insurance?
  • Do you provide breakfast?  Lunch?  Snacks?
  • How do you handle nap time?
  • What do you do if the kids won't sleep during nap time?
  • How do you handle discipline?
  • What are your hours?
  • What would we need to supply?
  • What is the teacher/child ratio?
  • Do you accept payment on the books or off?
  • Do you work with a curriculum?
  • Will you allow us to have summers off and still hold our childrens' spots?
  • Do we pay for every day of every week, even if the children are sick or we are home or have vacation time?
  • Will Jane and Emma be in the same room?
  • Will the same people be caring for the girls daily?
  • What is your teacher turnover rate?
  • What are the age groupings?  If there are classes, how long will the girls stay in each class?
  • What do the kids do on rainy days?
  • Is there a playground?
  • What is your TV policy?

This seems like an exhaustive list, but I created a spreadsheet and it REALLY helped me be able to break it all down and compare everything.

5.  When we went to the appointments, we watched how the staff interacted with Jane and Emma, how the children were interacting with each other, and how Jane and Emma reacted in each place.  We took careful note of the surroundings, and the toys that were available.  If the girls were timid, it was a red flag for us. They are pretty shy at the beginning of any meeting, but the places that they felt most comfortable ended up being our top contenders.

6.  We further narrowed it down by thinking about what was most important to us.  Our children are EXTREMELY active, and very intelligent.  So social interaction and intellectual stimulation were top on our list of priorities.  The next most important point was proximity.  I could not reconcile with being 35 minutes away from my children in case something happened (which, with kids, almost always inevitably does).  We also wanted them to be in a place where they could spend a few years, really get to know the staff and the other kids, and feel comfortable there.  It is so incredibly difficult to leave a crying baby, so we wanted to choose a place that was a "long-run" kind of place.

Ultimately we ended up going with the early learning center.  We were impressed with their curriculum, we know that Jane and Emma will be there all of the way until they enter the public education system in our town (we actually chose our town based on the great school systems, as well as the fact that we are as country as it gets for the county in which we live!), I don't have to pack breakfasts, lunches, and snacks every day, and they are only a quick 10 minute ride from work.  We couldn't be happier with the staff, and the activities that the girls get to do are AMAZING!  They come home with artwork almost weekly, and in November, they are participating in food drives, make-a-wish drives, and they are going to be creating artwork for elderly and sick people. The staff is supportive, understanding, and filled with mommies who get what it means to BE A MOMMY.  The director of the center even has a set of her own twins, so she totally gets me.  I really couldn't ask for anything more.

First day of school!

I am not going to lie to you, the first few weeks have been really difficult.  The girls cried every morning when we dropped them off, and it took them a while to get into a napping routine.  They are still home with the Grandma Squad two days a week, so I think that throws them off a bit, too.  But the teachers have been so sweet and accommodating, and even though I call EVERY DAY, they always answer the phone, calm my nerves, and assure me that the girls are doing GREAT.  Jane and Emma are so happy when we pick them up from school, and they sleep so soundly those nights!

And last week, the crying stopped, and Janey actually said, "BYE BYE!" and turned and ran to play with one of her teachers.  And Hershey and I breathed a sigh of relief and high-fived on our way out the door.

Coloring at Day Care

I hope that this helps those of you who are getting ready to navigate the scary and often murky child care waters.  Try to go with your gut - for us, that's what really worked best.  When it's right, everything will just click.  And if you EVER get the sense that something is wrong, don't be afraid to pipe up and ask questions.  I've been all OVER this Enterovirus D68 stuff.  The poor center director has fielded about 23 emails from me asking about their hand washing and toy cleaning procedures, all of which she answered patiently and graciously.

How are you planning to embark on this difficult decision?  Are you excited? Nervous?  I'd love to hear from you!

Good luck, and happy hump day!  xoxo

Bad Day to be a Clam

A few years ago, I stumbled into a very informal clambake at a restaurant and always thought it would be fun to have one in a backyard during the summer.  Well, Baby made my dreams come true, and yesterday we hosted our first clambake.

We ordered 500 littleneck clams, 4 dozen blue claw crabs, and 4 pounds of shrimp, and got to work!  I found a really easy recipe on Pinterest, whipped up a batch of spiked lemonade, and about 25 of our closest friends and their kids all gathered at our abode for a day of games, chatting, napping, and NOMMING!

I even got to sneak in some clams and fun, myself!

(Photos courtesy of my amazing friend, Krystle)

Jane and Emma had the TIME of their little LIVES!  Janey hammed it up and flirted with EVERYONE...

While Emmy rummaged through everyone's belongings, and even got into the adult beverage stash!

It was awesome to have everyone at our place, relaxing, knowing that all of the kiddies were not only entertained, but 100% cared for and watched after.

And we FINALLY were able to get a shot of the kids all together right before adult time ensued.  Ryan was the only one who was so pooped out by all of the excitement that he couldn't stay awake, so it turned into a chick pic (plus little Luke in Lindsay's belly and Baby G in Alie's!).  These girls were ready to PARRTTYYY!

Once the kids went to Sleepytown (we literally packed kids into almost every room in the house and then all ran outside!), we had some serious adult fun time.  Trust me, when you get four babies and one 4 year old to bed all at the same time in the same house, that's enough reason to party in and of itself.

Thank goodness that I have a very patient husband who is always willing to do whatever it takes to make sure that my every whim is made a reality.  He slaved over that grill all day making burgers and hot dogs for all of our guests.  When we finally rolled into bed at 2:30 a.m., my best friend and her family snuggled together in the basement, every bone in my body hurt, right down to my toes.

And that, my friends, is how you know that you had a damn good time.

What other kinds of fun parties are you throwing this summer?

Hope you all have a great week!

xoxo

WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!

I am SO PLEASED to announce that the winner of the GooseWaddle blanket giveaway is JILL MORAN!  This sassy diva is one of my bestest friends in the whole wide world's mama-dukes, and I KNOW she will put these blankies to great use, as she's got lots of babies to surround her with love and happiness.  Plus, she's always the FIRST to read and like my posts, so she totes deserves this!  CONGRATS MAMA!

Now for some bad news.  As house-hunting goes, every once in a while, you get lucky.  And sometimes you get your heart broken.

Our deal fell apart today.  There were some pretty major issues with the septic system on the property, and the seller was not willing to pitch in the money to get it fixed.  We simply cannot foot a $30,000 bill for a brand new septic system, so we had to walk away from the home.  It was so devastating, but the good news is, we had these beauties to come home to, and that made it that much easier to begin the hunt again, knowing that we are on the prowl for the perfect place for them to hang their little baby headbands.

And for that, Janey-boo was happy!

I'll continue to update you all on the process as we search for the perfect perfect-for-us home.  Tonight, we drown our sorrows in lemonade.  *winky emoticon*

Have a great weekend!  xoxo

Ten In the Tenth

Reflection.  In teaching, reflection is a big part of what we do.  I was recently observed by my principal and he challenged me with reflection.  How can I SHOW that I reflect on my practices?  How can I PROVE that I am always thinking about what I can do better, and that I'm implementing strategies to make me better at what I do?

Parenting is like teaching in many ways.  After I put Jane and Emma to bed at night, I fill bottles for the next day and spend time with Hershey, but I'm always thinking about how I could have done something better for them.  How I could have BEEN better for them.

For the sake of reflection, I'd like to take a moment to reflect on the month of October, and give you the top 10 things that I learned about being a Mommy in the tenth month of the year.

10.  At some point, you have to start putting bibs on the kids AT ALL TIMES.  Unless you want to do their laundry 413 times a week or just start taking out stock in Old Navy Baby and burning their clothes.  Then go right ahead and live dangerously.

9.  Once they get a little bit of weight on them and start moving their heads around, THEY OWN YOU.

Remember when you used to take those pictures at the bar so seriously, placing yourself at the exact right angle, tilting your chin up just right, smiling with just the right amount of teeth to make the picture look like the most amazing version of you?

Yeah.  Now that you have kids, just be happy if you don't look like Sasquatch in the pic.  No one is looking at you anymore, anyway, and that's a win, in my book.

(I mean, seriously, I look like the Hunchback of Notre Dame here.)

8.  Just quit buying them all of those expensive Sassy and Lamaze toys now.  They will inevitably find a ripped piece of cardboard or a dirty old blanket that they find more interesting.  Unless Lamaze starts making dirty gym socks, then RUN, don't walk, to the nearest BuyBuyBaby to pick one up (with your unexpired 20% coupon, of course)!

7.  When it is bedtime, you will rock them.  You will sing to them.  You will read them books.  You will do everything but tear your own hair out trying to get them to go to sleep, to which they will give you the finger and go on endlessly crying.  Until you want them to eat, or take a bath, or do just about ANYTHING but sleep.  Then, they will find the most inconvenient spot for YOU and conk out.

(Take note of The Bib.)

6.  When it's time to start solid foods, invest in and use the following during every feeding:  a cloth bib (are we sensing a pattern here?), a plastic bib (yup, definitely a pattern!), a small, heat sensitive spoon, Corningware ramekins, a chair that they can sit straight up in, and a rain slicker (for you).  Proceed with extreme caution.

5.  When you want to sleep, they want to do this:

(Taken in the Big Girl Bed at the Ritz Carlton in Philadelphia at 6:07 a.m. on the morning of my sister-in-law's wedding...)

4.  Props are fun in pictures...

...but it took us 149 shots to get this one:

(This was shot #19.  It was all downhill from here.)

3.  Halloween can quickly become your favorite and most hated holiday of the year.

We spent way more time thinking about what to be for Halloween and how to dress the girls than any of us actually spent WEARING the costumes.

2.  Velvet is cute in theory, but is never a good idea.  No wonder Babies R Us was selling these costumes (ladybug and bumblebee) for half-off during the week of Halloween.  Next time, I'll take the hint...

And the #1 thing that I learned about being a Mommy in the month of October......

HIRE A BABYSITTER!
For the day of the party, AND especially the day after!
